How Burglar Alarms Work

A burglar alarm uses detectors around a property to identify activity that the system has been set up to recognise. When a detector is triggered while the alarm is set, it sends a signal to the control panel. The panel processes that signal and follows the programmed response, which could include sounding an external alarm, sending an app notification or passing an activation to a monitoring service.

The exact response depends on the system installed. A standard audible alarm does not automatically contact the police, while monitored systems have a separate process for receiving and responding to alarm signals.

Understanding these differences can help homeowners and smaller businesses choose a burglar alarm system that suits their property and how they want to be alerted.

How Does A Burglar Alarm Work?

Most burglar alarms follow the same general sequence, although the equipment and response arrangements can vary between systems.

A detector first identifies activity within the area it covers. This could be a door opening, movement inside a room or another event the particular detector is designed to recognise. Different detectors use different methods, so burglar alarms do not all rely on movement breaking an electrical circuit.

The detector communicates the activation to the alarm’s control panel. The panel acts as the central point of the system, receiving information from connected devices and responding according to how the alarm has been configured.

Depending on the system, this may activate an internal or external sounder. Systems with additional notification or monitoring arrangements may also send an alert to an app or transmit a signal for off-site monitoring.

The alarm can then be unset by an authorised user using the method provided for that system, such as a keypad, fob or compatible app.

What Are The Main Parts Of A Burglar Alarm?

Although systems vary, several components have common roles.

Component What It Does
Detector Detects the activity it is designed to identify, such as movement or the opening of a protected door
Control panel Receives information from the system’s devices and manages the programmed alarm response
Keypad, fob or app Allows an authorised user to set or unset the system where supported
Sounder Provides an audible warning when the alarm is activated
Signalling or monitoring equipment Where installed, passes alarm information beyond the property for notification or monitoring

The equipment required depends on the property, how it is used and the level of security being considered.

Wired, Wireless & Hybrid Burglar Alarms

Wired, wireless and hybrid describe how parts of the alarm system communicate. They do not tell you who will receive an alert when the alarm activates.

A wired burglar alarm uses physical cabling between relevant components. Wireless systems use radio communication between compatible devices, reducing the amount of cabling required around the property. Hybrid systems can combine wired and wireless equipment within the same installation.

The right approach will depend on factors such as the building, existing equipment and where devices need to be installed. Argus supplies wired and wireless burglar alarm systems for homes, businesses and commercial properties.

Audible, App-Notified & Monitored Alarms

The way an alarm is connected should be considered separately from what happens after an activation.

An audible alarm uses a sounder to provide a warning at the property. It relies on somebody nearby hearing the alarm and taking appropriate action.

Systems with compatible app functionality can send notifications to the user’s phone, allowing them to receive information about the system remotely. The functions available will depend on the equipment and setup.

With burglar alarm monitoring, signals can be transmitted off site for handling by an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). Argus works with NSI Gold approved ARCs as part of its remote monitoring services, with options ranging from app-based systems to monitored arrangements where appropriate.

These choices are not necessarily separate types of burglar alarm. For example, a wired or wireless system may also include an audible warning, app functionality or off-site monitoring.

Does A Burglar Alarm Automatically Call The Police?

A burglar alarm activation does not automatically mean that the police will be contacted or attend the property.

The police distinguish between monitored alarms, unmonitored alarms and auto-diallers. An auto-dialler can alert pre-programmed contacts by telephone or text, but it should not be programmed to contact the police directly.

Police response for security systems follows specific requirements. The police explains that officers will typically respond when requested by a police-compliant monitoring company. Qualifying installations are registered and issued with a Unique Reference Number.

A monitored system therefore should not be described as automatically calling the police whenever a detector activates. The response depends on the monitoring arrangement, the system’s eligibility and the applicable police requirements.

Argus can provide monitored security systems, including options with police response where suitable. Whether that arrangement is appropriate will depend on the property and security requirements.

Choosing The Right Burglar Alarm

Choosing between the types of burglar alarms starts with understanding the property and deciding what you want to happen when the system activates.

For some homes, an audible alarm or system with app notifications may provide the features required. Other homes and businesses may benefit from off-site monitoring, particularly where a property is regularly unoccupied or there is a need for alarm signals to be handled away from the premises.

Argus Fire & Security has more than 35 years of industry experience and installs burglar alarms for residential and commercial properties. The team can assess your requirements and explain the available options without assuming that every property needs the same alarm or response arrangement.
