    Our Origins

Roger Wood previously helped to build up one of the North West’s most successful intruder alarm companies in the 1970s and 1980s. Oldham Security Services Co Ltd was a family business successful over three decades. Roger’s father Alan Wood had a lifetime of security industry experience and under his leadership employed over 40 people at its peak. In 1984 the American International Corporation Honeywell targeted and eventually purchased the company which had by then its own alarm receiving centre.

After the sale of OSS, Roger worked in construction for a few years but was inevitably drawn back to the security industry in 1993. Then in 1994, Roger purchased a small but well-run company with a reputation for quality. Argus Alarms as it was known then, became Argus Security Systems Ltd in 1995 and 20 years later in 2015 after achieving BAFE approval, became Argus Fire and Security Ltd as it still trades today.

In May 2022 Argus were acquired by Metro Security PLC, a family run business based in the south of England. (Although, now owned by Metro Security) Argus has retained it’s core values from the last 35 years and still trades as an independent company.

Present day – Argus is a thriving business, working predominantly across the North West of England, with reach across the whole of the UK.

    Our Operating Area

Argus Fire and Security Ltd are based in Wigan near Manchester, in close proximity to the M6, M61, M62, M65 and M58, providing an ideal location to cover the North West of England. From these offices, we install and maintain systems from Cumbria to Cheshire and Flintshire and across to West Yorkshire. However, national accounts demand nationwide coverage and we believe that we are able to provide this in the best way possible. We are a member of a group of similar sized reputable NSI and BAFE approved companies located throughout the UK, which we have agreed reciprocal service arrangements with. Our national customers know that all their branches receive the best local service with the personal touch, which only small local companies can provide, yet only have one point of contact.

Since 2022, after being acquired by Metro Security PLC, our future plans are to grow on the foundations that we have built over the last 30 years, and expand the company further to provide new products and services and expand our coverage to our customers.

    Future Plans

At Argus we have always been careful to get our existing business running smoothly, before starting new projects. Intruder alarms have always formed the core of our business and gradually CCTV, door access and fire alarms have been added. Since 2015 after achieving BAFE approval for fire detection systems, fire alarms have become a much larger part of our business. BAFE approval ensures that all our fire alarm installations will be certified by the NSI in a similar manner to intruder alarms, access control and CCTV. Since January 2016 Argus have also been Gent approved, meaning that Argus are trusted by Honeywell Group to install and maintain one of the UK’s premier brands in the fire industry, only Gent approved companies can install Gent fire alarm systems. Our future plans are to continue to grow the business with the same ethos we have always had and expand our coverage and services further across the UK.

    Health & Safety

Early in 2008 Argus Security Systems Ltd as we were then known first became accredited with the Contractors Health & Safety Scheme, CHAS. This ensured that we promoted the latest safety techniques to give less risk of incidents to our staff, customers, and members of the general public. Argus Fire and Security Ltd recognise the importance of health and safety and are committed to promoting safe working environments. All Argus engineers have completed the CSCS health and safety training test, CSCS (construction skills certification scheme) was set up in the mid-90s with the aim of improving site workers competence to reduce accidents on construction sites and similar work environments. In 2024 Argus were proud to hold multiple H&S accreditations including, CHAS, Safe Contractor, and Constructionline. Our engineers, undertake ECS, PASMA, IPAF and Asbestos Awareness Training.

    Constructionline

In 2009 we gained Construction Line membership. Construction line is the UK’s largest certified pre-qualification database, saving the construction industry over £500 million a year in administration. Already used by over 60% of local authorities, they reduce duplication and save time and money by encouraging organisations to use a single source for pre-qualification.

    Our Corporate & Social Responsibility

In relation to our corporate responsibility, in 2016 Argus put staff who drive company vehicles, on a driving awareness course, this course was designed to teach our drivers more fuel efficient techniques to both save the company money on fuel costs and help reduce our carbon footprint,

Argus also runs fuel efficient vehicles and are proud to say that all our company cars are hybrid technology. Argus is a company that continually invest to ensure that we have some of the most highly trained and capable staff in the industry.

Our annual financial contributions assist the running of this facility in Wigan which is something Argus is very passionate about. Over 35 years of Argus

Argus Alarms was originally set up in Wigan in 1986 and was purchased by Roger Wood in 1994, who built the company with assistance from the other business partners over the next 22 years to the company we are today. In 2003 Mark Pritchard became a business partner and shareholder of Argus, and in 2008 Stephen Leigh became a business partner and shareholder. Roger, Mark and Stephen worked very hard to build Argus on the principles of quality, service and re-investment. This has enabled Argus to grow steadily and become a market leader in the security service sector.

Roger, Mark and Steve continued to grow the business until 2022 when the business was acquired by Metro Security PLC. Metro’s future plans are to grow Argus Fire and Security LTD and continue to re-invest and support the staff in the same way that has been done over the last 35 years.
